Switch
A switch steers networking traffic between nodes in a network. They operate on OSI level 2, and as such operate using MAC addresses (Big difference against Hubs on OSI 1 which broadcast to all hubs except origin of message.), with MAC it only sends to the correct port.
Gateway
Gateways facilitate the transfer of data between different discrete(?) networks. Gateways use multiple protocols (>1) to connect multiple networks to each other. Can operate on all layers of OSI.
Default gateway
A default gateway is a network node that uses IP to route data from a network to other networks, this often includes a change of network technology.
